The Value of Studying Abroad: Zita’s Journey from JIC to CU Boulder
Zita’s decision to study in the U.S. was influenced by the vast academic and research opportunities available at American universities. She appreciates CU Boulder’s proximity to nature, which allows students to enjoy outdoor activities like rock climbing and skiing. The university’s strong engineering programs and research funding made it an excellent choice for her academic journey.
Her transition to CU Boulder was made significantly smoother through Jakarta International College (JIC). JIC provides an internationally recognized pathway to top universities worldwide, allowing students to complete part of their studies in Indonesia before transferring abroad.

Inspiring the Next Generation Through STEM and Study Abroad
In a lively chat with Zita, a robotics teacher and engineering outreach member, we learned about her life, struggles, and the drive that makes her work so special. From juggling a busy schedule to inspiring young minds in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), Zita’s journey showcases her dedication and passion for both teaching and engineering. However, her story doesn’t end there.
As an international student, Zita’s decision to study abroad was a game-changer. It shaped her academic and professional path in amazing ways. Her experience at Jakarta International College (JIC) was especially helpful in preparing her for CU Boulder, where she continues to thrive.

Balancing Multiple Roles in Engineering Education
Zita’s professional life is a whirlwind of exciting projects. As part of an engineering school’s outreach team, she collaborates with engineers from mechanical, electrical, computer science, and aerospace fields to design workshops for high school and elementary students. These workshops allow students to engage in hands-on learning, making complex engineering concepts accessible and fun.
One of the standout projects she worked on was a rocket-building workshop at Centaurus High School, a STEM-focused institution. Using OpenRocket software, students designed and 3D-printed their own rockets, then used altimeters and sensors to measure CO₂ levels during launch. This interactive experience transformed theoretical knowledge into real-world applications, making engineering education incredibly engaging.
Zita’s commitment to STEM education recently led to an exciting opportunity—she received an offer from Lavner Education to teach C++ and Java programming, as well as a web development class. These courses will be held at prestigious locations, including UCLA and Cal Poly Pomona. This new role further solidifies her impact in engineering education, allowing her to reach and inspire even more students.

Overcoming Challenges in Teaching and Time Management
Zita understands that teaching can be demanding, especially when balancing work and studies. Her schedule is packed with classes, work commitments, and social events, but she stays organized using color-coded planners to keep everything on track.
Despite the challenges, she finds fulfillment in teaching. "It makes me happy when students feel inspired to learn more about engineering," she says. Seeing her students grasp complex concepts and develop a passion for STEM makes all the effort worthwhile.

A Passion for STEM, Art, and Community Engagement
Beyond her work in education, Zita is deeply involved in student organizations. She is an active member of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and CU Boulder’s Women in Engineering Club (CUWIC), both of which provide mentorship, professional development, and networking opportunities for women in STEM.
She has also contributed to CU Boulder’s Sounding Rocket Lab, where students design and launch high-powered rockets. This hands-on experience has allowed her to collaborate with peers, solve engineering challenges, and gain real-world technical skills.
However, Zita’s creativity extends beyond engineering—she is also a freelance painter. She paints at weddings and sometimes for private events like birthdays. Her artistic side provides a unique balance to her technical work, allowing her to express herself through colors and brushstrokes.

Advice for Future Students Considering Studying Abroad
For students aspiring to study abroad, Zita’s advice is straightforward: relax and trust the process. She encourages students not to stress too much over applications, GPA, or career paths. Instead, she emphasizes the importance of networking, engaging in meaningful conversations, and staying open to new experiences.
Studying abroad is about more than academics—it’s a journey of personal growth, cultural exchange, and expanding career opportunities. By choosing the right pathway, such as JIC’s international programs, students can navigate this transition with confidence.
