Some universities are built centuries ago, with the University of Bologna being the oldest in the world that's still operating to this day. We believe that a University's history is reflected in its students, their alumni, their cultures, and, most importantly, their buildings. Today, let's talk about some of the most historic university buildings in the world.
Bodleian Library – University of Oxford
Established in 1602, The Bodleian Library is one of the oldest libraries in the world. It is the primary research library of the University of Oxford. Bodleian Library holds over 12 million items, which makes it the second-largest library in Britain after the British Library. Architecturally, it is considered one of the first masterpieces of English Gothic architecture. However, its most recognizable feature may be the Tower of the Five Orders, five ordered pairs of columns designed in the Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, and Composite styles.
Nassau Hall – Princeton University
Nassau Hall is not only Princeton University's oldest building, it is also a famous historic landmark in America. The building was initially built in 1756 for the College of New Jersey (former name of Princeton University) and was the venue for American Congress's meetings for several months. At the time it was built, Nassau Hall was the largest stone building in all of America. Another critical history of the building is during the Revolutionary War, the land around the building became a scene of a bloody battle. The battle of Princeton was also a significant turning point of the war with George Washington triumphing over the British occupying Nassau Hall
Durham Castle – Durham University
Durham Castle is the magnificent centerpiece of University College at Durham University. It is dated back to the 11th century and was initially built to showcase the power of the Norman King in North England. The Castle was donated to the University in 1837, and today, it hosts more than 100 students with carious occasions being held there every year. It is jointly designated as a UNESCOWorld Heritage Site with Durham Cathedral. Some lucky students are not only able to learn in the Castle, but they can also live in the Castle!
